Additionally, iMessage can create several issues when trying to stay productive and people need to talk. Over the past year or so, Apple has also added tons of new features to iMessage, making it really fun to use!
iMessage is a handy way to stay in touch with friends and family on the Mac, but there are times when you want a break from everyone. Here we’ll show you how to log out of iMessage on Mac, how to sign out of iMessage on Mac, how to silence iMessage on Mac, and some apps that can help you stay focused and your Mac running smoothly.

How to turnoffiMessage on Mac
If you want to disable iMessage on Mac, you can do one of several things. They may need to know how to stop getting messages on Mac (but not iPhone), how to mute messages on Mac but still receive them, the best ways to stop iMessage notifications, or how to delete iMessage from Mac totally.
Deactivate iMessage on your Mac
On a Mac, deactivating iMessage is very simple. There is a way to disconnect Mac messages without deleting your account, but this isn’t the method for quieting notifications. Here’s what you need to do:
- On your Mac, open the Messages app (Note: Messages is the app that receives iMessages)
- Select Messages from the menu bar.
- Select “Preferences”
- Select ‘iMessage’ at the top of the pop-up screen. (Note: A Mac running macOS Catalina or earlier selects ‘accounts’ on the pop-up screen.)
- Remove the mark “enable messages in iCloud” for the account you need to deactivate.
You will then be prevented from receiving iMessages on your Mac.
Disable iMessage on your iPhone
As closely linked as iPhone and iMessage are, you can turn them off on your iPhone or iPad! You can do it quite quickly as well. After learning how to stop iMessage on Mac, here’s how to do it on iPhone:
- Navigate to Settings on the iPhone.
- Select Messages
- then click “iMessage” to turn it off
There’s only one thing you need to do to disable iMessage on the iPhone. Oddly simple.
How to turn off notifications from iMessages
On our Macs, we know how to delete messages – but how can we delete notifications? You can do that as well! On a Mac, you can disable iMessage notifications by following these steps:
- Select the Apple icon in the Mac menu bar and choose
- Choose
- Choose “System Preferences”
- Select “Notifications”
- Press on “Messages” on the left side of the app screen.
- Switch “Allow Notifications” off
All iMessage notifications will be disabled on your Mac after you click this button.
If you’re trying to eliminate distractions on your Mac, controlling notifications may appeal to you. Give Bartender a try if that’s what you’re looking for.
The bartender removes every little icon from your Mac desktop and tucks them away behind a three-dot menu. By clicking on an icon, you can resurface or hide it, and you can choose to keep the most important ones visible at all times and hide the ones you won’t interact with.
Furthermore, Bartender gives you more control over what’s displayed in your menu bar. There is an option to reduce the number of times icons are refreshed while your Mac is on battery power, which helps prolong the life of your laptop.
How to deleteaniMessage Conversation
On your Mac, you can delete one iMessage conversation using two different methods.
Open the Messages app on your Mac first. Select “Delete Conversation” from the pop-up menu after selecting a conversation that you’d like to delete. A separate menu will appear if you drag the conversation to the left; here you can turn off chat alerts or delete the conversation altogether.
How to Backup Messages/iMessage on iPhone
If you’re going to destroy a conversation, it will delete the whole messaging thread. Rather than lose all of the messages, videos, images and more in that conversation?
AnyTrans comes in handy here. The AnyTrans iPhone backup manager relies on a hardwired connection to the Mac to back up your complete iOS system or unique content, such as messages. As well as backing up your data, WhatsApp also lets you restore and download content. You can also download and restore your entire media library from your Mac and load downloaded videos directly onto your iPhone.
AnyTrans is the best backup manager for Mac and iPhone, giving you total control.
What to do if Messages is not running correctly
Unfortunately, not working iMessages is not a unique problem. The program suffers from hiccups often, but it can be fixed easily.
Reopen it after shutting it down. When iMessage is left open on a Mac and used on another device, such as an iPad or iPhone, it has difficulties syncing. You can reconnect to iCloud and all your messages by closing and reopening your phone.
Disable, then re-enable iMessage. We’ve shown you how to disable iMessage on the Mac and how you can turn it back on if the app is having difficulty syncing with iCloud.
Manage your notifications. If there are no messages, does that seem like iMessage isn’t working as it should? In System Preferences, navigate to Notifications and adjust notifications as desired.
It is sometimes impossible to fix iMessage issues that are more profound. It is for this reason that CleanMyMac X is needed.
With CleanMyMac X, you can ensure the performance of your Mac is always at its best. Smart Scan, its most essential feature, finds unnecessary junk your Mac doesn’t need, scans your Mac for viruses and malware, and configures your Mac for maximum performance. CleanMyMac X’s Maintenance module can fix slow or underperforming apps by restoring app permissions.
You can free up space on your Mac quickly by opening CleanMyMac X, selecting the Smart Scan module, and then choose “Run.” Following the scan, CleanMyMac X will prompt you to remove the unwanted files and perform speed optimizations by clicking “Run.”
